Spotlight Club: Aktion Club of Sullivan County
AKTION CLUB OF SULLIVAN COUNTY IS VERY SPECIAL
The Aktion Club of Sullivan County was chartered on July 23, 2015 with 14 members. Now they have grown to 27 members and several potential new members will be installed shortly. The sponsoring clubs are the Kiwanis Clubs of Monticello and Woodridge. They received excellent guidance from DPLTG Gerda Krogslund and DPLTG Ed Stoddard, who is a very active member of the Kiwanis Club of Chester as well as advisor for the Aktion Club of FEC/HRW (Family Empowerment Council/Hudson River West.)
The club is very active and the members are always ready to participate in various community service projects as follows:
• They visit residents at several of the local nursing homes where they socialize, entertain by singing and dancing and playing games. They enjoy bringing little bottles of toiletries to the residents, including hand lotion, cologne, or fragrant talcum powder.
• In November, the members decorate and fill baskets with non-perishable Thanksgiving food items which are distributed to families in need in various school districts and the Federation for the Homeless.
• They volunteer at the Interfaith Council Community Thanksgiving Dinner where they greet guests with their winning smiles and distribute informational brochures;
• In the spring the members participate in the Annual Kiwanis Family Walk for Hunger. Admission for this event is either a non-perishable food item or monetary donation, all of which is donated to the United Way of Sullivan County to assist them in replenishing the local food pantries in the community. The participants do a two mile walk on the beautifully paved Rails to Trails in Hurleyville, NY and then congregate for refreshments at the Hurleyville Arts Centre where they join the entire Kiwanis Family consisting of Monticello and Woodridge Kiwanians, K-Kids, Builders Club and Key Club members as well as the public.
• They collect monetary donations and participate in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s in the Fall; and
• They make beautiful cards for homebound individuals which are distributed to participants of the Meals on Wheels Program sponsored by the Sullivan County Office for the Aging.
The club’s main fundraiser is their Annual Car Wash. The members warmly greet each customer and always do an outstanding job washing the car exterior, tires and windows with sponges and brushes until they shine. There is no charge; however they gladly accept donations and tips.
Another fundraiser is raffling off handmade items. Last year they raffled off a beautiful holiday wreath that was made and donated by one of the agency reps and this year Distinguished Past Lieutenant Governor Sue Sheehan donated a beautiful fall theme basket, which brought in $163.00 for the club to use toward community service projects.
Every one of the Aktion Club members are so very special. They are supportive of one another and demonstrate genuine care and concern for others. They are always ready, willing and able to help out with all community projects since they love to help people and make them smile. Apparently they are good advertisement for the Aktion Club since they tell their friends about all their activities and encourage them to come to meetings and join as members. They are always coming up with great suggestions to keep the club activities fun and interesting.
